CFS: Rejoining Your Life
Certainly if you feel renewed, refreshed and even re-born after overcoming Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), you want to go out and re-tackle the world. Maybe, even better than you ever have before. You can look forward to feeling confident and happy again.
Certainly you’re entitled to such elation. However if you’ve been ill even a relatively short period of time, your body may be de-conditioned and a bit out of shape compared to the person you were before you became sick.
Physicians and occupational therapists caution “recovered” patients not to overdo. They advise that you re-build your body and system slowly.
The key is to be as active as you can be without triggering old symptoms. Control and measure your activity level.
Consider upcoming events ahead of time and plan, plan, plan. Whatever you do, don’t overdo. As Dr. Charles Lapp advises, use the “envelope method” of measuring and using your daily energy supply.
These are great suggestions even when you’re suffering with CFS. Remember that you only have so much energy. It’s necessary to be really smart about how you use it. You don’t want to “blow out” your energy stores (whatever they are) and find yourself in bed for a day, a week or six months! (That can encourage the return of some very unpleasant symptoms… .)
Whether you’re contemplating changes in your activity level, diet, doctor, prescription drug regimen or adding alternative health care methods to your regimen, be cautious as you begin regaining your life after Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
