Fear of Being Normal

First off, you are perfectly normal if you occasionally live with the fear of being normal instead of enjoying a happy and healthy life.

What does that mean? Many things to many people. Let’s take a look at this issue.

a) Normal people are average and most people don’t want to be average. Why? Why does the word ‘average’ evoke the emotion of fear? Probably because you, like everyone else, want to be special or non-average. You want to contribute to this world and leave your mark. You want your life to count for something big. You want to live a happy and healthy life. That is normal, but when the effort gets tough in our challenging world, you may begin to fear that the reality simply won’t be there. That’s when the fear of being normal creeps back in and takes over. Your dreams of a happy and healthy life fly out the window!

b) Normal people are often disrespected or don’t get noticed at all. How horrible! So what is the opposite of a normal person living a normal life? Think movie stars. Think politicians. My thought today is to encourage you to not think of such individuals as ideal people. Many of them are not happy and would give their eye teeth to be ‘normal’ again. That’s why they escape with drugs, alcohol, addictions to sex, addictions to power and money, finally running away to far off islands to escape the pitiful lives they have created. They don’t have the courage to be normal and often have lost the ability to make it happen, even though they deeply long to be normal again.

c) Normal people are often thought to be unsuccessful, overworked, in debt up to their eye balls, under-loved, unappreciated, boring, fat and unhealthy. That’s a horrible statement and yet, much of the time, it’s often true. Surely you and I may not be perfect. Our lives are filled with challenges, but it is those very challenges that get us up out of the bed each day! The challenge to succeed and make life better are the goals that movitate us. It’s what got me up out of the bed this morning to write this blog post!

I encourage you to think differently: don’t fear being normal at all. Decide what is normal, what is healthy, what it will take for your average day to bring you joy. Decide what kind of job you want, what kind of people love you, what type of friend supports you, and lastly… what level of health you want.

Most people are brought up to believe that they are limited. That they, as a human being, can only achieve so much before life knocks them back down. That is hogwash. I see people over 100 years old living the life they want to live and are completely happy and darned healthy.

I have a distant aunt who is over 103, lives happily by herself in her own country home, tends her own garden and keeps a shotgun over the mantle to scare the deer away if they get to close to her vegetables. She’ll use it, too. With one mighty blast of buck shot whizzing past their ears, those deer think twice before visiting her garden again! This marvelous lady can carry on quite a lively conversation, walk as good as I do and has a smile as broad as Texas. She is charming and lightens my heart each time I visit her.

My point is that this amazing woman chooses to live life on her terms. She decides her reality and probably did so a long time ago. That’s why her life has been so good and so happy for so long. I’m sure it has a lot to do with why she’s so healthy.

My other point in telling you this is to encourage you to decide how you want to live your life. Don’t be afraid to be normal on your terms. Throw those old feelings of “fear of being normal” out the window! If your life and health aren’t the way you want them, get to work. It’s never too late to decide to be happy and healthy.

Okay- here’s a tool that you can begin to use today to make this happen!
